Chapter 01

Paint or whitewash: two different looks

Schneider Painting offers whitewashing and exterior brick painting to transform the look of your brick by applying a high-quality, durable paint or a traditional whitewash that creates a unique and textured finish while protecting the surface.

Paint is the solid, clean look. A full coat of color goes over brick and mortar alike and gives the house one even color, like the gray stone-and-brick front and the navy porch base in the photos below.

Whitewash is the softer option. It modernizes and lightens brickwork while preserving its vintage charm, so the texture of the brick still shows through. Which one fits your house depends on the brick and on what you want to see when you pull into the driveway, and we talk it through with you at the free in-home estimate.

Brick has to breathe

Brick and mortar are porous. They take on water and let it back out, which is part of why old brick lasts. A coating that seals brick up tight can trap moisture behind it, and that moisture can show up later as bubbling paint or a white powdery crust on the surface.

So the product matters as much as the color. We choose products that resist the adverse effects of weather, UV rays, and time, and we clean the brick first, taking off dirt, mildew and anything loose, so the finish grips the brick and not a layer of dust.

Done right, the finish protects the surface and helps maintain your brick's strength, instead of covering up problems that come back.

Inside and out

Painted brick and whitewash work indoors as well as out.

Our finishes suit interior and exterior spaces. Outside, that might be a whole house front or a porch base. Inside, it might be a fireplace surround like the painted one in the sage living room photo on this page.

Indoors, the work comes with the same care as the rest of our interior jobs: floors and furniture protected, cleanup at the end of the work, and a final walk-through with you before we call it done.

We strive to offer affordable options that also promise quality and durability. Price is set per project after we have seen your house in person, and there is no published price list, because no two brick houses are the same.
